WASHINGTON -- A bill banning lead and other dangerous chemicals from toys, jewelry, and many other things that sometimes end up in the mouths of children is now in the hands of the Senate. The House voted 424-to-1 to impose the toughest lead standards in the world. It bans lead beyond minute levels in products for children 12 or younger. It also bans children's products that contain six types of chemicals found in plastics that are suspected of posing health risks. The Senate could pass the legislation by the end of the week. The White House isn't happy about some things in the bill, but isn't threatening a veto. Under the plan, the Consumer Product Safety Commission would see its budget doubled, and be given new authority over testing. Forty-five million toys and children's products were recalled in the U.S. last year. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |

MINNEAPOLIS -- Northwest Airlines says it will add fuel surcharges of up to $80 for many domestic round-trip tickets. A company spokeswoman says the surcharge will apply to travel to about 7,000 city pairs beginning January 10. She says Northwest is matching surcharges added by competitors in those markets. Northwest already has fuel surcharges in other markets. Northwest shares rose 47 cents to close at $9.16. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |

Inside the showroom at Amsum & Ash, a natural stone wholesaler in Fridley, there is granite in just about every pattern imaginable. And if you've built, or rebuilt, or just stood inside a kitchen lately, you don't need Zach Hallberg to tell you how popular granite countertops have become. "For the most part, it's the aesthetic of the granite that sells it," he said. But in the past week, Hallberg, who is the company's chief operations officer, said he's been fielding a few phone calls from customers who have concerns about the stylish and durable rock. "It hasn't been an enormous volume of calls," he said. "An average of 4-5 homeowners a day or so." |
