WASHINGTON -- A bill banning lead and other dangerous chemicals from toys, jewelry, and many other things that sometimes end up in the mouths of children is now in the hands of the Senate. The House voted 424-to-1 to impose the toughest lead standards in the world. It bans lead beyond minute levels in products for children 12 or younger. It also bans children's products that contain six types of chemicals found in plastics that are suspected of posing health risks. The Senate could pass the legislation by the end of the week. The White House isn't happy about some things in the bill, but isn't threatening a veto. Under the plan, the Consumer Product Safety Commission would see its budget doubled, and be given new authority over testing. Forty-five million toys and children's products were recalled in the U.S. last year. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
